White Cliffs Underground

Cliff Edge Emplacement

This WW2 emplacement/observation post is situated right on the cliff edge close to the South Foreland Lighthouse near
St. Margaret's to the east of Dover. It is one of a chain of emplacements built along the cliff tops between Folkestone and St. Margaret's. This particular building has always been very close to a shear drop, down to the beach several hundred feet below. But in the last few weeks a large part of the cliffs fell away leaving it balanced precariously on the cliff edge. There are cracks in the ground running around behind the emplacement and it can't be long before this old sentinel from WW2 is gone forever. These photos were taken in Feb.2001.
