White Cliffs Underground

North Entrance- Part 2

The Western Heights contains over 5 miles of dry moats, unfortunately much of the Heights is derelict and many parts have been demolished over the years since WW2. Most of the ditches, like those at North Entrance are overgrown and the brickwork has seen better days. The new road cut through the North Lines also destroyed a section of the ditch but luckily left the original entrance, as seen in these photos, more or less untouched. The tunnels and fortifications here make for some interesting exploration.

Looking into room from gun port. Note fireplace in far wall.

Back up the stairs and turn right into the road tunnel, brings you to the bricked up outer entrance.

After squeezing through a hole in the bricks, we are just behind the raised drawbridge of the North Postern.

On the left is the bricked up doorway at the top of a spiral staircase. Below...

...in the pit under the drawbridge is a doorway leading onto...

...the bottom of the spiral staircase from the bricked up entrance above.

Looking up the shaft of the staircase towards the upper door.

The original door to the staircase, inside the North Postern entrance.

Now bricked up on the outside.

Looking back down the ruined staircase from a rather precarious position at the top.

(cf photos of same staircase taken in 1978- see North Postern)

In the pit under the drawbridge is the winch used to lower it.

Back up at the North Postern can be seen one of the massive

wooden sliding doors recessed into the wall (at right of photo).

There is a corresponding door recessed into the other side of the entrance.

The heavy double wooden doors open on stairs leading down to...

...a bricked up sally port that led into the bottom of the moat.

Note the remaining door leaning open to the right of the photo.

The North Entrance from outside the defensive ditches. The raised drawbridge can just be seen

through the gap in the central island. The iron girders of the bridge in the foreground

carried the wooden decking of the original roadway (cf photo below).

View of North Entrance, postern gate, taken in June 1978.

Note wooden decking still on bridges.

Also see North Postern for more photos taken in March 1978.
