Old Charlton Rd. TunnelThis tunnel is situated in the Buckland area of Dover. The entrance is in the bank at the side of Old Charlton Road near a Pillbox and in the same area as the Long Hill Tunnels. Unfortunately the tunnel was short, cut directly into the chalk and finished in a dead end after going in only a little way. The original purpose of the tunnel is a mystery. I explored this tunnel in the company of John Vaughan in March 2001, before we moved on to another site at Noah's Ark Road where we had better luck.

Close up of the entrance.
Just inside entrance looking into tunnel.
The nicely finished end to the tunnel, with no signs of fallen chalk, means the tunnel was stopped or abandoned here with no apparent purpose.
The light at the end of the tunnel- looking back down the length of the tunnel.
