White Cliffs Underground

Underground/Ex-Military Sites

There are many intriguing structures, tunnels and subterranean constructions in the South East of England. The sites listed below are not necessarily underground or military, but are generally one or the other.
This project started as a personal record of my explorations and for in-depth research you are directed to some of the excellent websites in the links section. All text and pictures within these pages by Keith Slade unless otherwise stated.
Special thanks to all the people who have supplied me with additional maps, plans and diagrams (especially Paul Wells, John Vaughan and Jeff Howe.). Thanks also to my friend David Weeks, now living in New Zealand, for his help in exploring some of these sites.

The photographs of the sites were taken either as slides and scanned, or using a digital camera. Lighting was by camera flash, often supplemented by slave flashes to increase the illuminated area. Unfortunately the scanner used for the slides does not do a very good job of scanning them and the quality of these pictures is not very good. I will rescan them when a better machine is available.

I have decided not to use thumbnails, but instead to try and set a balance between resolution and image size. Inevitably this means that some of the pages will take a while to download, I hope that those of you interested in the contents of these pages will find the wait worth it. A tip I find useful is to wait until the download begins to slow, then hit 'refresh'. Since most of the pictures are now in the browser's cache, the page will then finish loading much faster.
